Seat In The Sky
“Did you get fatter while I was dead?” Al grunted with every passing branch. They were almost at the top now.
Meeko poked his head out of Al’s pack and shot a warm sarcastic bark down the back of his neck.
“And you didn’t leave any for me? Carth would’ve dragged my ass there and saved me a bite.”
He felt a single lick.
“It’s okay, buddy, it’s just my feelings.”
Stopping just short of where the branches thinned, Al hung Meeko up by the straps of his pack. Weaving a web of rope between the two sturdiest branches, he made a comfy little perch to enjoy the view. ‘Seat in the sky’ Sarah liked to call it. Tying the final knot, Al flopped comfortably against the trunk, opening his arms wide like it would help him take in more of the view.
Every cloud, every tree was a work of art. A whole wide world wrapped around him like a whirlpool of light and sound and color. The red glow of the leaves as the forests played catch with the afternoon light. The music as the breeze bowed and bashed the blades of the golden grass that hugs the road and blankets the rolling hills of the Yellow Sea. The higher they climbed, the more accurate the name became; Golden grass stretched from road to horizon, rising and falling like waves in the wind. The sky towering bright and blue like a tsunami come to douse the fiery reds and yellows of the flora.
“Look at that, that’s the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen!” Al almost shouted
Meeko barked an objection.
Al laughed and bounced a crumpled red leaf off of Meeko’s nose, “Don’t make me blush.”
Wind and Tree slow danced together, swaying gently to the melody of the Yellow Sea. A herd of pillboys grazed in the fields, sunlight glistening off of their round armored shells, all beautiful blues, browns, and grays. Crows cawed in the distance, Al squinting to see a line of hundreds shoot out of the grass in a wave of their own as something disturbed them from below.
Al grinned, “Look, Meeks” Al followed the crows until the ground churned where they once rested, the great maw of a breaching wyrm bursting from the dirt, its countless tusks and teeth twisting like the bit of Aure’s drill, scales red as realwood glistening in the sunlight as it arched and plunged back into the depths with a distant rumble Al could feel reverberate through their tree.
“You know, they’re kind of beautiful from far away.”
Meeko barked in agreement.
“Yeah, I’m sure they’re a lot scarier on the inside,” Al yawned, tucking himself into the blanket of sunlight. He smiled to himself as the grass played them a melody. Life is good, Meeks.
