Pink sunlight began to pour in from between the trees, signaling the end of twilight and lifting the blanket of shadows from the clearing. The “giant” was indeed a giant. A hulking humanoid robot swallowed up by the earth, its lower half and left arm planted firmly in the ground. Orange and purple moss bordered where the rusted metal met the dirt. His missing sword was found, stuck deep in the articulated neck of the beast. Al placed a hand upon the metal, layered so thick with moss and rust the bot could have been made of stone. It felt ancient……older than any other bot he’d seen, older than the forest around them.
“Oy, what happened to you, big guy? You look like absolute glass…” He smiled, plucking off some of the dried roots growing out from between the armored plates and flicking them right into the monster’s one big empty eye socket in the center of its ‘face’. Moss dangled from the opening like eternal tears. Al’s smile faded to a frown finally recognizing the bot’s design. “Aw, man……”
He sighed and plucked away the teary moss, gently knocking on the side of its head, “You’re a Gardener……” Al kissed his own hand and pressed it back against the sunken scrap. “I didn’t know……I’d say I’m sorry I killed you, but……...you probably started it……Rest easy, friend……I’ll send some folks to find you soon, I promise.”
